102 Years Plus, a Great Run

Some of you know the reason for this blog but for those who don’t, here is a short review.  In 2011, I started writing emails to my sister, Annette, so my then 95-year-old mother could keep track of the travels of her baby boy, Robert.  Soon after I started, my sister-in-law, Fayla, told me “Annette doesn’t get up until 10 AM, send me the emails and I will read them to mom.”    Other family members asked to be included in the email.  Then friends asked to be included.   I soon had a very bulky email list and decided to turn my travel emails into a blog.

Today the reason for starting these emails/blog has left us.  Yes, my mother, Irene Reiss died today at the age of 102 years (and 5 months).  She had a wonderful life surrounded by many friends and relatives who loved her dearly.  She will be missed but never forgotten.

My mother was a very caring and honest person.  She taught me important life lessons that I have tried to pass on to my own children.  I am a very lucky man to have had three wonderful children and a caring wife.   My parents were fantastic role models for me.  Although neither one of them went to college, they taught me more than any of my medical school professors about how to be a good doctor.  You don’t learn compassion in school, you learn that at home.  Thanks, Mom and Dad.  Thanks for helping me become the person I am.

Love you,

Robert

  2. My Dear Friend,

I am so sorry about the passing of your dear Mom! While I never did get the chance to meet her, I grew up seeing you and heard many cherished stories of her!!! A long life -102 years old is amazing!!! Fourteen years longer than my Mom! You have been a wonderful son to both your parents! She will never be forgotten nor will your Dad! I think about mine all the time and am forever grateful for their love, all they taught me, and for introducing me to you!!!

Thinking about you and your entire family!!!

    Love,

  7. What tender, kind and respectful words about your mother. The pictures are wonderful. I see a vibrant woman and her family.

And on another note, Patrice may have noted on FB – or not – that Michael died about a month ago. He was creative and courageous until the end, but that’s another story. I hope you have good family times together – with plenty of laughter and tears – as you remember your mother’s long life.

  10. Robert –

What a wonderful tribute to your parents – and particularly your mother. God bless her. You and your family are so fortunate to have had your mom for such a long time; we are sure that she loved seeing you as an adult living the giving/sharing life that she and your dad instilled in you. Of course she reveled in your sense of humor.

We send our love to you, Patrice and your entire family at this really tough time.

  13. Dear Doctor Reiss,

102 years! That really is amazing. Your mom sounds like a special lady –

loved and loving. I like the photo of you and she (in her pink top) hugging each other – both of you with terrific smiles

and hanging on as though neither wants to be the first to let go. It sounds like she and your dad provided a wonderful atmosphere

for you and your siblings growing up. What more can we ask for?

Bill and I send our condolences to you and the family,

    Sincerely,

    Martha
